Sunlight is a stream of tiny energy packets called photons. About eight minutes after leaving the sun, they land on the panel’s anti-reflective glass.
Inside each silicon cell, a photon knocks an electron loose. The p–n junction between the two silicon layers pushes electrons up and the holes they leave down. That push is the cell’s voltage.
Thin silver fingers collect the electrons. Busbars carry them to the junction box, and direct current (DC) runs down the cable to the inverter.
Homes run on alternating current. The inverter converts DC into AC that matches the grid: 230 V at 50 Hz, switching direction 100 times a second.
Your fan, lights, TV and fridge use solar power first. Surplus units flow out through the bidirectional net meter to the grid and are credited on your bill.
